Assistant Professor Ariana Valle publishes article in The Florida Historical Quarterly

Assistant Professor Ariana Valle published an article in a Special Issue of The Florida Historical Quarterly (vol. 102 no. 2).  The article, "Political Bridging and Struggles in Puerto Rican/Latino Solidarity Politics in Orlando" focuses on Puerto Rican and Latino politics making in Florida; specifically, it examines how a politics of solidarity is forged between Puerto Ricans and Latinos in Orlando metro during the 2016 election.

Jennifer Krebsbach receives Distinguished Graduate Student Paper Award

Jennifer Krebsbach has received the Distinguished Graduate Student Paper Award of the Pacific Sociological Association for her paper titled, “Firewomen ‘Promote a Culture of Safety,’ but Firemen ‘Face Hazardous and Unpredictable Situations’: Gendered Job Description Narrative Outputs by Large Language Models.”

Jennifer Krebsbach wins Best Research Award

Jennifer Krebsbach won Best Research Award for her work "Analyzing Gendered Job Description Narrative Outputs by LLMs: When Computational Methods Analyze the Results, But Miss the Context" at the CSS Escape 2025 hosted by UC Davis' CSS DE, Center for AI and Experimental Futures (CAIEF), and AI Center in Engineering.

Professor Xiaoling Shu Publishes Article in Social Science & Medicine

Professor Xiaoling Shu co-authored an article with Ph.D. alumnus Yiwan Ye. The article, "Unequal but Widespread Despairs: Social Inequalities and Self-Rated Health Trends in the United States in 1972-2018," published in Social Science and Medicine, sheds light on declining health trends in the United States and deepens our understanding of health inequalities and their dynamics in high-income countries. Wen Guan Selected to be 2025 Equity Scholar

Wen Guan was selected to be a 2025 Equity Scholar in the NORC at the University of Chicago, Equity Scholars Program. This program will assist Wen's research on reimagining community safety for AANHPI communities with effective non-carceral solutions to combat anti-AANHPI hate crime.

Associate Professor Orly Clerge Co-Authors Article in International Migration Review

Associate Professor Orly Clerge published a new paper titled "Ain't I a Migrant?: Global Blackness and the Future of Migration Studies" with co-author Jean Beaman in the International Migration Review. Associate Professor Jacob Hibel Receives Grant from Urban Institute

Associate Professor Jacob Hibel received a research grant from the Urban Institute for a project titled "What Skills Help Students with Disabilities Thrive?" This research will investigate how the services and supports provided to students with disabilities during their K–12 education relate to their academic and life outcomes in early adulthood, including postsecondary attainment, income, and more. Using linked data from Oregon and the U.S. Census Bureau, the study will evaluate how outcomes vary depending on the services students received and their duration.
